British Values Statement - Radcliffe on Trent Junior School

Introduction

At Radcliffe on Trent Junior School we are committed to promoting the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values underpin our school ethos and are embedded throughout our curriculum, daily school life and wider opportunities for pupils.

Promoting British Values supports pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development and prepares them for life in modern Britain. Through our teaching and the experiences we provide, we aim to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to become responsible, respectful and active members of society.

The promotion of British Values is closely linked to our safeguarding responsibilities and supports our duty to challenge discrimination, prejudice and extremist views. Our approach reflects the expectations set out in the Department for Education guidance on promoting fundamental British values in schools.

Democracy

At Radcliffe on Trent Junior School, we believe that pupils should have meaningful opportunities to develop an understanding of democracy and the importance of participating in decision-making.

Pupil voice is central to our school ethos. Pupils are encouraged to share their views and take an active role in shaping school life. Some examples include:

• Pupil Council
• Eco-Council
• Sports Representatives
• Anti- Bullying Champions
• OPAL Play leaders
• Learning leaders

Representatives are chosen to reflect the views of their peers and meet regularly to discuss ideas, raise issues and suggest improvements to the school environment. Class council meetings provide a regular opportunity for pupils to discuss topics that matter to them and contribute to decisions that affect their learning and wellbeing.

Democratic processes such as discussion, debate and voting are used within these groups to ensure that pupils understand how decisions are made fairly.

Our Year 6 pupils also have the opportunity to participate in the Rushcliffe Pupil Parliament, enabling them to engage with democratic processes within the wider local community.

Through these experiences pupils learn that their voices matter and that democratic systems require participation, respect and responsibility.

The Rule of Law

Understanding the importance of rules and laws is an essential part of school life. At Radcliffe on Trent Junior School we ensure that pupils understand that rules exist to keep people safe and support a fair and respectful learning environment.

Pupils are involved in establishing expectations within their classrooms through the creation of a class charter, helping them to understand the purpose of rules and the importance of shared responsibility. School rules and expectations are reinforced consistently through daily routines, assemblies and classroom practice.

Our Behaviour Policy supports pupils in understanding the consequences of their actions and encourages them to take responsibility for their behaviour.

Through the curriculum, pupils explore how laws operate within society and how they help to protect individuals and communities. Pupils also learn that laws apply to everyone and that they help to maintain fairness and order. Opportunities within the curriculum allow pupils to compare rules and laws in different societies and contexts, helping them develop a broader understanding of how communities function both locally and globally.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs

Mutual respect and tolerance are fundamental to our school values and are embedded throughout our curriculum and daily interactions.

At Radcliffe on Trent Junior School we actively promote respect for others and celebrate the diversity of our school community and the wider world. Pupils are encouraged to understand that people may hold different beliefs, traditions and perspectives, and that these differences should be respected and valued.

Our Religious Education curriculum provides opportunities for pupils to learn about a range of faiths and worldviews, helping them develop understanding and respect for different beliefs. Within PSHE, pupils explore themes such as empathy, relationships, diversity and inclusion. The school also follows the ‘No Outsiders’ program, which supports the teaching of British values by using age‑appropriate books and lessons to promote inclusivity, respect for diversity and understanding of the Equality Act 2010.  

Whole-school assemblies, themed learning days and celebration events also reinforce these values. We encourage pupils to reflect on their own beliefs while appreciating and respecting those of others. Through these experiences pupils develop the understanding and attitudes needed to live and work positively within a diverse society.

Individual Liberty

At Radcliffe on Trent Junior School we promote individual liberty by supporting pupils to develop independence, confidence and self-awareness within a safe and supportive environment.

Pupils are encouraged to express their ideas, make choices and take responsibility for their learning and behaviour. Our curriculum provides opportunities for pupils to explore their rights and personal freedoms, particularly through PSHE education and e-safety lessons.

We place a strong emphasis on helping pupils understand how to exercise their freedoms safely and responsibly. Pupils learn about personal boundaries, online safety, and how to seek help or support if needed. These themes are closely linked to our Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy.

Our teaching approaches also encourage independence and ownership of learning. Strategies such as choice of challenge allow pupils to select appropriate levels of difficulty and develop resilience and confidence as learners.

A wide range of extra-curricular activities further supports pupils’ freedom to explore their interests and talents beyond the classroom.

Preparing Pupils for Life in Modern Britain

The promotion of British Values is embedded throughout the curriculum and wider school life at Radcliffe on Trent Junior School. These values are reinforced through teaching, assemblies, pupil leadership opportunities and everyday interactions.
