Our Curriculum: Making Learning Memorable
At Radcliffe-on-Trent Junior School, our curriculum is built around a simple ambition: to make learning memorable.
For us, memorable learning is learning that lasts and experiences that matter. We want children to develop secure knowledge and skills, make connections between what they learn and become increasingly confident and independent in applying their learning. Alongside this, we want them to experience a rich and positive education that broadens their horizons, develops their interests and gives them memories and experiences that stay with them beyond their time at ROTJS.
Our curriculum reflects our belief that every child should be known, valued and challenged. We have high expectations for all pupils and recognise that children have different starting points, experiences and needs. Through ambitious, inclusive and responsive teaching, we identify and reduce barriers so that every child can access the curriculum, achieve well and participate fully in school life.
Our commitment to No Outsiders runs throughout our curriculum. We want children to see themselves reflected in what they learn while developing curiosity about people, communities, cultures and experiences beyond their own. Through our curriculum and wider school life, pupils learn to value difference, build positive relationships and understand their place and responsibilities within their local community and the wider world.
Our values of Be Kind, Be Curious and Be Brave describe the children we want to nurture and the attitudes to learning and life that we develop every day.
Be Kind – children learn to respect and value themselves and others. They develop empathy, build positive relationships, celebrate difference and understand that everyone belongs.
Be Curious – children are encouraged to ask questions, think deeply, make connections and want to know more. They develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to explore ideas and become lifelong learners.
Be Brave – children learn that challenge, mistakes and setbacks are part of learning and growing. They are encouraged to persevere, try new things, contribute even when they are unsure, respond positively to feedback and become increasingly independent.
Our curriculum extends well beyond individual lessons and subjects. Sport, creativity, performance, outdoor learning, visits, residentials, leadership, enrichment and involvement in our local community all contribute to children's development. We want every pupil to have opportunities to discover interests and talents, contribute to school life and experience a genuine sense of belonging.
By the time children leave ROTJS, we want them to have achieved well and to be ready for the next stage of their education. Just as importantly, we want them to leave us as kind, curious and brave young people: confident in themselves, respectful of others, willing to embrace challenge and equipped with the knowledge, independence and sense of responsibility to contribute positively to the world around them.
Making Learning Memorable: Learning that lasts. Experiences that matter.
