Modern Foreign Languages - Spanish Curriculum Intent
At Radcliffe-on-Trent Junior School, we believe that learning Spanish gives children the confidence to communicate in another language while opening their eyes to different cultures, communities and ways of life. Our curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and engaging, enabling every child to develop a strong foundation in Spanish and a positive attitude towards language learning.
Through our commitment to Making Learning Memorable, pupils develop their knowledge of Spanish phonics, vocabulary and grammar through listening, speaking, reading and writing. They learn how sounds, words and structures work together to create meaning and use their growing knowledge to communicate for different purposes. As pupils move through the school, they revisit and build upon previous learning, communicating with increasing accuracy, fluency, confidence and independence.
Our school values are woven naturally through Spanish. Pupils Be Curious as they explore how another language works and discover the cultures and traditions of the Spanish-speaking world; Be Brave as they speak, listen and communicate in an unfamiliar language without being afraid to make mistakes; and Be Kind as they value different languages, cultures and ways of communicating.
Learning Spanish at ROTJS also broadens pupils' understanding of the wider world. They encounter the diversity of Spanish-speaking communities and develop an appreciation of both similarities and differences between languages and cultures. Spanish also provides continuity into the next stage of pupils' language learning, helping prepare them to continue developing their knowledge and confidence at secondary school.
By the time pupils leave ROTJS, we want them to have the knowledge, curiosity and confidence to understand and communicate in Spanish. They will have a secure foundation in listening, speaking, reading and writing, an understanding of how language works and an enthusiasm for continuing to explore languages and cultures beyond primary school.
